Everyone wants to be popular

by benjii Monday October 2009

Hi Guys,

It seems even though gigpig users love adding gigs and then exclaming that it and other gigs they know of are real, its just not very fun to click "Real" over and over for gigs most people only assume are real. So to create some excitement and new a lust for gig adding, we've decided to change our gig guide model to suit popularity, whilst still implementing a reliability system that will work in the background through the use of magic and an array of voodoo spells to bring users only real gigs.

This new popularity system now encourages users to "Promote" gigs, allowing you and your friends to bump your favourite gigs up the list based on how many people promote it. On the other hand if you see a gig you dont like and want to knock it down a peg, you can also "Bury" gigs. These two new features combined make up a gig's "Popularity", and determine its place in the gig list.

To sweeten the deal even further, everytime a user promotes a gig you have posted, you gain more reliability. For all users who aren't quite sure what your reliability score does, the more you have, the more you are allowed to edit and manipulate more important parts of gigpig, including other people's gig and band information. Who knows, it may even lead to some fringe benefits.

On the horizon, users can look forward to gaining reliability through the addition of correct information to incomplete gigs, and seamless integration with your favourite social networking sites.

Until then keep Gigpigging!

New Features and (Hopefully) Users

by Luke Wednesday September 2009

Good morning/afternoon sirs/madams,

Just a quick update about some new features added recently to Gigpig.

Facebook style mini comments on gigs in the list to encourage more conversation on the site. These comments can be accessed by clicking the number of comments link under each gig.

minicomment

You will also find that click city names will bring you to a city specific gig list. This is a quick view of gigs, bands and venues in the city and can be filtered by today, this week, next week or all.

Apart from those we have done a whole lot of bug fixes so the site should be much more stable ready for the new features that are just round the corner.

This week we will also be inviting the good folks from the www.smallnightin.com forum (formerly BDO forums) to try the site out. They formed a large part of the community on the old Gigpig and we look forward to having them back.

The Direction of Gigpig

by benjii Wednesday September 2009

Now that Gigpig is available to the public, we'd love to know what you think and what you would like to see Gigpig become. Drop an email to info@gigpig.fm with any suggestions or comments.

Next in the pipeline is the ability to follow your favourite bands / venues / users etc.. and have a feed of their updates. Very twitterish I know, but that seems to be the trend for sharing information these days so why not jump on that bandwagon. If constant updates from your favourites being injected into your feed list wasn't enough, we're also adding the ability to comment a la facebook on upcoming gigs to help spread the excitement.

Keep your eyes peeled...

Gigpig.fm Beta Launch Incoming

by Luke Wednesday August 2009

After one previous incarnation (www.gigpig.com.au) and much hard work the team at Gigpig is proud to announce a closed beta of the sites core features is ready to launch in the next week or two (after we sort out some hosting business).

What is Gigpig?

For those of you who never used the old site, Gigpig is a community generated live music guide. This essentially means that our users add upcoming gigs in their local area which are then displayed and discussed on the site.

To weed out spam and fake gigs we have a simple moderation system in which every gig can be voted as real or fake by users. Other than that we have some cool user related features such as reliability ratings and achievements.

Whats a closed beta?

A closed beta basically means we will be slowly exposing users to gigpig to get feedback on what works and doesn't and what new features to add. We will build the user base over time before promoting the site to the general public.

Features you say?

On the road map:

  • Follow your favorite bands, venues and gigs and be updated when they are
  • All encompassing feed for your followed items
  • Revamped commenting/communication between users

Check it out gigpig.fm.
